TEDxYouth KL 2013

I love going to motivational talks or self development workshops or anything relatively close to that. If you don't know what TED is, it's basically a non profit organization that organizes conferences that gather inspirational speakers to spread their ideas and experiences towards success. In life, in business, entertainment, technology and just about anything. I love the idea of TED because it definitely inspires and motivates people around the world, especially youths. Like me. I found TED talks to be very useful and entertaining because it doesn't just focus on one thing only. It's not always boring and all "business". Although I'm not implying that business is a boring thing but you know what I mean. TED talks include people from different backgrounds, successful in their own ways. Starting up their businesses, failed and didn't give up, people who came out with an innovation to improve lives, people who fight for the environment or animals, even people in the entertainment industry, who work through days and nights just to produce something for the society to enjoy during their leisure time. You know, all these people are very inspiring. So to witness their talks right in front of my own eyes was one of the best moments in my life. I always watch TED talks on my phone (you can download the TED app in the AppStore!) while having my breakfast, every day. I don't know about you, but other than exercising and eating healthy breakfast in the morning, I find that watching inspirational videos and reading motivational books before starting my day can really make the rest of my day better. I am more enthusiastic and motivated to go through the day and do productive activities throughout the day when I started the day with a combination of exercising, good breakfast and talks or videos in the morning. You should try that too, if you want to change the way you look at things in your daily lives. I assure you, you'll be more positive than ever! Include that as your New Year's resolution if you want. After all, I once read that a simple action can change everything.

Back to TED.

On November 16th 2013, my brother and I attended the TEDxYouth in KL. My brother sponsored me the ticket because he knows how badly I wanted to go. The tickets were only RM50.00, but to have someone pay for me is way better. Haha. It was held at the Penthouse @ The Icon near Jalan Ampang. My brother and I played safe by taking the train to the venue because we didn't want to get stuck in the crazy traffic.

We had our breakfast after registering at this little cafe just opposite The Icon called Danielle's. They have awesome American Brownies is all I can say because that was the only thing I had. But the cafe's ambiance is really nice. Sort of like a chill atmosphere.

Before we were allowed to go in the hall for the conference to start, my brother and I went around and met new people. It was just so amazing of how these people are so successful and I like talking to them because they all have this positive energy that I can feel surrounding the whole place.

Oh and I also met one of my juniors from high school and he was a volunteer for TEDxYouth! How cool is that?!

Some of the speakers were Razif Hashim (an Actorpreneur), Azim Hulaimi (Co-founder of Mira Digital & Visual Effect Artist, was apart of the making of Life of Pi), JinnyBoy (Youtuber & Radio DJ), Gajen Nad ( A standup comedian), Dr. Clarence Tan (Ambassador of Singularity University), Dr. Lovisa (A Marine Biologist), Yit Ming (Co-Founder of Soft Space), Christian BPalencia (A Barefoot Musician) and my most favourite speakers that day, Joyce (Founder of Otak Otak) and Li Kheng Phng (A business Extraordinaire). All the speakers gave amazing speeches, I must say. Truly inspiring!

I know this is really late, but I want to thank my brother again for sponsoring me the ticket and going there with me. I'm really lucky to have a brother who always support me in everything I do and share the same visions and interests as me. I love you, Abang! *blowskisses*

Eat Healthy?

How often do we find ourselves saying "I want to start eating healthily" without knowing the true meaning of what is actually healthy to eat and what isn't?
If you're like me, you are probably lying to yourself.
I always thought I was eating healthily but how can I eat healthily if I don't even know what is healthy food in the first place?

It's not good to binge eat, sure. But how many of you know that it's also not good to avoid eating completely? I used to be so insecure about my weight that I don't eat anything except an apple and 3 cups of plain water every single day. I lost weight, yes. But was I healthy? Not at all.

Since I stopped being a Pescetarian (another 'way' of mine to lose weight but it was a complete fail), I started eating chicken, meat and lamb. I haven't been gaining weight at all though but had been losing instead. I also feel a lot more energetic than I was when I was a pescetarian. So I know to avoid all kinds of meat completely is not the way to go. I now know what is actually good and what is bad for my body. But what is knowledge if you don't share it with others, right?

So I would like to share with you the Top 10 Food to eat and to avoid for heartburn and indigestion.

The picture above shows bad food and good food according to the color. Red being the most acidic and not good for you and green is good for your body.

I find it easier to control what I eat during the month of Ramadhan. However, after one month of fasting, when Eid comes, where all the good food we all love will be served at every single house we visit. How can one avoid food during Eid then?

Well, to me, you don't have to avoid it completely. You can have them but eat in small portions. That's the key. But of course, if you're strong enough to avoid them, you can do that too.

Now that you know all the good food for you, let's all eat only the good food so we all can be healthy this Eid! :)

Eating Healthy

I don't know how healthy is healthy but at least to me, the definition of eating healthy is ice cream, Cheetos, popcorns, cheese burgers, chips.... Just kidding. Hehe.

In all seriousness though, I've been wanting to eat healthily since forever because I want to have a good body because hello, which girl doesn't dream of having Adriana Lima's body? However, that seems pretty far fetch for me, so I shoved that thought away and focus on just having a fit and healthy body. Even a million years of diet won't get me close to any of the Victoria's Secret's angels, so I just stopped dreaming because I'll be depressed just by thinking about it and when I'm depress, I eat. That's not the plan now is it?

I'm pretty glad that my body is now realizing that it's important to choose the food I eat rather than just shoving everything down my throat regardless of the consequences I have to bear later on. So that day I went grocery shopping with my Mom and I was pretty shocked myself with what I ended up throwing in the cart. Usually every time I go grocery shopping, I will straight go to the snacks and chocolates aisles and just live there for a moment. Haha. My cart was usually full with crackers, Cheetos, M&Ms, Boost Chocolate Bar, Mars, Snickers, a tub of ice cream (doesn't matter whether it's Ben & Jerry's, Starbucks, Blue Bunny, Thrifty or Sunny Side ice-cream). I always have a tub of ice-cream in my cart. Sometimes two, but you know, I'm not going to explain that because I know I shop for groceries like a total fatty (not being judgmental here. I'm just describing myself) but hey, please don't judge.

That day, I had to do a double take to really believe what I actually bought. I didn't know I was eating so unhealthily until then. Some of the food I bought were instant garden salad with croutons, blueberry cereal bars, non-artifical blueberry juice, yoghurts and green tea. Fyi, I HATED GREEN TEA!! But I heard green tea is suppose to be good for your body or something, so I decided to just give it a try and hey, whaddayaknow I LOVE IT now!!!

Some of the meals I eat these days :

Breakfast

Brunch

Dinner

Also, I have been drinking coffee almost every single day now. This is totally on a different note, I'm not even sure whether coffee is good for your health (I doubt it) but I'm just wondering what made me start drinking coffee. Is it because I'm getting older and that's why my taste is changing? I used to cringe at the smell of coffee but now, I sometimes open the pantry cabinet to just have a swift smell of the coffee. It's so weird.

It's kind of hard though, when I'm addicted to coffees. I have the urge and crave for Starbucks every day. Sometimes twice a day. It has gotten chronic, guys.

Okay, despite everything I typed above, want to know what I did a couple hours ago?
.

.
Ate 1/4 plate of Ayam Penyet Rice.
Yeap. All those 'eating healthily' before for nothing.
Excuse me, so I can cry by my own in a corner.

Breakfast

Good morning everyone!

I'm eating my breakfast while typing this. It's a bowl of Lucky Charms, one of my favorite cereals ever! What's your favorite cereals?

Anyways, I want to apologize for the lack of updates. Yes, yes it's the time of year where I say 'I have a lot of assignments to do and tests are stressing me out!'. Same old, same old. But seriously though, assignments have been eating up my life lately. For one of the assignments, we need to draw a whole plan of township on our own. Ummm, hello? We're not town planners, we're real estate people. So why bother? That's the reason why we're not in Town Planning department, our hands aren't skilled to do all those things. If we were taught to draw plans from the beginning, I won't mind. But we weren't! We have completely zero knowledge on how to even hold the pencil to draw and they expect us to magically turn into skilled planners. That's just ridiculous if you ask me. On top of that, we are suppose to prepare a 70 pages of A3 sized report. And that's only one assignment.

Give me a minute so I can jump off a cliff.

Fried Kuey Teow

Sure, Chili's and Delicious are amazing places to dine in but sometimes stalls or some small restaurants are better. Have you tried the famous Kuey Teow Aunty Gemuk located at Jamal Mohamed Restaurant? If you haven't, you definitely haven't live your life to the fullest. Okay, maybe that was too much. But seriously though, you should really grab your purse & car keys and go now. Like, right now. Hehe.

I remember the first time I tried Aunty Gemuk's Kuey Teow, I was a little kid. Around the age of 6 or 7, back then when Aunty Gemuk's stall was located at the other end of the shop lots, at Subang Ria Restaurant. Dad always tell us how he would bring Mom there to eat back when they were dating. Such a loyal customer, my Dad.

Sometime this year, I brought Zahir there because I was craving for the Kuey Teow so bad. And guess what guys? He's addicted now. Yes, he's been nagging me and annoying me to have lunch with him there for the past week. A couple days ago, I had some free time, so I finally said 'okay, let's have lunch at Aunty Gemuk'.  You guys should see how he lit up when I said 'Aunty gemuk'!! I bet he doesn't even lit up like that when he hears my name!! He ate a big plate there and took home one more plate. Pretty greedy, this one.

My meal wouldn't be complete without the fried yong tau foo from the stall next to Aunty Gemuk's. SO GOOD!!!

Jamal Mohamed Restaurant is located near the FAM football place in Kelana Jaya.

You should try them too and if you have, are you as addicted as Zahir is?

Mom's Birthday

My mom is the only role model I had and have. She's the only woman I really look up to. Why? Because she's a superwoman. She takes care of 4 children, do all the works around the house, she cooks amazingly, she's a teacher (which to me, is the most sincere job in the planet), she can be best friends with her kids but can be really strict on certain cases as well (I'm not complaining, I swear! Hehe), she's a good listener, I can talk to her about anything & everything and there are a thousand more things I could list down but it's impossible because the list can go on forever. Basically, she's my superwoman. My heart and soul. My everything.

It would be crazy if I didn't make her feel like a queen on her birthday. I mean, that's the least I could do, compared to all the sweats and efforts she put in to raise all my siblings and I. Dad had a meeting in Ipoh on her birthday, but he promised he'll be back on time for the birthday dinner I planned for Mom. Mom didn't know though, that Dad would be joining. She thought it would be just us girls ; herself, Nina, Fara and I. "It's going to be a girls night out and it's on me because it's your birthday," I told Mom. She hesitated at first, probably didn't have the mood to go for a celebration without Dad. However, Nina and I are really good at persuasion. So... Mom got ready for the dinner.

In the car, I blindfolded Mom with my sleeping mask. Didn't want her to know I was actually tailing behind Zahir's car because I didn't know the way to the restaurant. When we arrived, we had to go up on a hill, and Mom was so nervous, saying things like 'are we hiking?' and 'are we in a forest? Because I swear I could hear crickets and I can smell the leaves!' We laughed so hard all the way from the car to the table.

When we arrived at the table, Zahir, Zarif and Dad were already there and they've set up the table with balloons, cupcakes and flowers.

Mom's expression when I opened the blind fold was priceless. She straight away hugged me, I could see that she was sincerely happy that night. Mission accomplished!

I love you, Mama. I wouldn't trade you with anything or anyone in this world. I will always include you and Dad in my prayers. Hope you enjoyed your birthday dinner this year!
